Features, documentaries, shorts, series and branded films each ask something different of a score. Jeffrey Carabelos has written for all of them, and the approach adapts to the format, the schedule and the budget in front of him.
Independent and feature film composer
Independent features carry the most music and the least margin for error. Jeffrey works closely with directors from early cuts through the mix, building themes that can carry a ninety-minute arc and adapting them as the edit moves. Recent feature work includes Wolf Empire, Devil in the Trunk and Starfish.
Documentary film composer
Documentary scoring is restraint work: the music has to hold a scene together without arguing with the interview on top of it. Ambient beds, small ensembles and motifs tied to the people on screen do more than a wall of orchestra ever will.
Short film composer
A short has minutes to land an idea. Jeffrey scores shorts as complete pieces of music rather than trimmed features, which is why so much of the credit list — from The Story of a Rock to El Espectro — is short-form work that went on to festivals.
Television, web series and visual media
Episodic and web work needs a musical identity that survives a dozen episodes and a delivery pipeline that keeps up with them. Jeffrey builds a theme package up front, then scores episodes against it so each cut arrives sounding like the same show. Branded and commercial visual media — including work for Optum — follows the same process on a shorter clock.
